shin is a 16-year-old japanese boy, born and raised in sweden, who ran from home to japan at a young age. his story contains triggering content expressed on my opt-out post, i encourage you do check it and let me know!

shin's the bassist for the punk rock band black stones, or blast. he also was canonically a sex worker. his arc in the manga revolves around him and his friends understanding he's solely a child, and that actions have consequences. it also deals with growth, as shin realizes that he can't put everything on the backburner of his mind and let life go through him.

shin was born and raised in sweden, his (real) birthdate stated to be november first, 1985. not too long after he was born, his mother took her own life, leaving him to be raised by her husband. as stated by his stepfather himself:

"I've never had any affection for Shinichi. Not even once. And God knows I've made some efforts."

on top of this, his three years older stepbrother despises him, creating thus a very dysfunctional family devoid of familial love. overshadowed by his brother and neglected by his father, shin ran from europe to japan. finding himself in a place where his language skills were severely limited, as well as his cultural understanding, shin had no one or nobody to rely on.

ryoko was an air stewardess who lived in the same building. she took interest in shin early on, and shin, unfortunately, becomes dependent on her for income and education on how to be a successful escort. shin's not the only one she's taken - it's shown that she does have several other boys in vulnerable positions that she grooms. not only did she introduce and manage shin in the business of sex work, but she's also given him drugs and alcohol throughout his time with her.

as shin walked the streets of tokyo some time in the future, he comes across nana komatsu, futurally hachi (affectionate), as she had placed posters looking for a bassist for nana osaki's band. hachi brings him home to introduce to nana, and he promptly delivers an application form made of lies - his birthdate reflects his stepbrother's on january 25th, 1983, making him 18 years old, as well as stating his birthplace is tokyo. nana impresses him with her charisma, and he eagerly shows her his abilities with the bass, each time more excited for the experience, and luckily, nana is just as impressed as he is. his playing style reminds her of someone, and she asks him who is the bassist he admires the most, to which he replies:

"Honjou Ren! I'm not really a fan of Trapnest. I'm a fan of Ren's. I've always played the guitar, but when I saw him playing bass, I wanted to play bass too.

unbeknownst to him, that's the spot he's covering, as ren had been the bassist for nana's band in their hometown as they lived a romance before ren left to join trapnest. nana only has a single condition for shin to be a band member: surpass ren. after this, he starts crashing at with nobu, the guitarist, and begins his career as a bassist. nana and shin bond vaguely about the idea that some parents wouldn't worry about their children when she questions him about it, and yasu, a lawyer who had also been in nana's band alongside ren and nobu joins. it takes very little time for his appearance to change, and once he gets the lip piercing, hachi comments that it will make it hard to kiss once he does, to which he confesses to nana and hachi:

"No, it was alright."
"Shin, who did you kiss! Nobu?!"
"Nobu's gay?!"
"No, but I thought he was."
"Say, Shin, do you intend on staying at Nobu's?"
"Recently, I only crash at Nobu's occasionally, you know. I don't wanna abuse of his hospitality."
"Oh! So you went home!"
"No ♥"
"In that case, where are you living?"
"At a woman's house."
"WHAT?!"
"Different each time. I'm only 15 years old, I'm rather fragile and it's difficult for me to find a job. I understood that living that way, I'd never have money problems."
"Shin... You're a born idiot."

after a while, blast gets their first concert and shin gets closer to the fans of nana's previous band. hachi finds out about ren's and nana's previous arrangement, and shin had already figured it out due to nobu's loose lips when he drinks. hachi and nana go to a trapnest concert, in which nana and ren make up, thus giving shin the opportunity to meet his idol and roast his ass on a mahjong game. takumi also joins the party as a surprise to hachi, as he's her favorite. hachi and takumi hook up, and the band attends a trapnest concert as they are now rekindled friends and acquaintances.

once the concert is over, shin meets reira, the vocalist of trapnest. immediately, she notices his charm, and he offers her a card and a very expensive pricetag. while trapnest celebrates another successful concert for the staff, shin finds it a wonderful opportunity to bond further with ren, his night ruined by takumi mouthing about his night with hachi in a degrading way. shin throws whiskey on his face, because takumi sucks a-real bad. as shin and nobu leave the party, they have a conversation regarding hachi, takumi, nobu's feelings for hachi and shin's work:

- Takumi is such an idiot! Hachi's our dog, she belongs to us! He wants to steal her from us!
- Shin, don't talk about her as if she were really a dog...
- But it's still annoying. Get her back for us, Nobu, you like her, right?
- Nonsense.
- ... Coward.
- I can't do anything! Hachi likes that guy!
- But she likes him as a fan, right?
- In the beginning, yes, but when she met him, she really fell in love with him, or else she would never have accepted his advances!
- But it was only the following day of their meeting... I wonder if it will really turn into anything serious. I think she just got caught up in the heat of the moment.
- WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! HACHI ISN'T THAT KIND OF GIRL! I'm pretty sure that Takumi was able to charm her with the right words.
- I'm not so sure. Hachi isn't that stupid.
- It's not that she's stupid, she's innocent! And she's really obedient!
- I know that. But, Nobu, you were also shocked by Reira, you have to stop idealizing women so much, right? You think women don't have libidos?
- WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HACHI HERE! DON'T PUT HER INTO THE SAME CATEGORY AS THOSE EASY WOMEN THAT GRAVITATE TOWARDS YOU!

Hachi as w ell, she might feel alone since she broke up with her boyfriend, don't you think? But you're too slow, you got one-upped by Takumi... I can't do anything for you. Anyway, even if it was started by the heat of the moment, you know Hachi... Without a doubt, she'll fall even more in love... Right? If it keeps going on like this, Hachi will suffer even more. I can see it. I don't want that to happen. Doesn't that mean anything to you, Nobu?

- You know, all the women I know. They want me for my body, or even my heart, but Hachi's nice to me without wanting anything in return. That is what's so attaching for me...

soon after, shin finds himself in reira's bed after she's paid his very high price in cash. she finds herself opening up to him about her struggles in not having a place to belong due to her heritage as a half-american, half-japanese singer, who has to keep aspects of herself hidden in order to be able to sing - something shin can relate to, but stays quiet and lets her talk instead. the next morning, it's announced that blast will be signing with gaia music.

as shin'd forgotten his lighter, a very expensive, limited-edition vivienne at reira's, she calls him to retrieve it, all so she can see him again. he refuses to come into her room without proper payment, which sprouts the following conversation:

- First, you have to pay.
- But I didn't call you here for that...
- In that case, I have nothing to do here. I'm going home.
- What about your lighter? Don't you want it back?
- If you want, I'm giving it.
- Sorry, I'm giving it back... Don't be angry...
- It's not true that I ask for 100.000 yen a night. Sometimes, I get an ever bigger pay, but up until now, no one has paid me that much in cash like that. It was the first time you paid yourself a man, right, Reira? At the beginning, I got into your bad girl game, but generally, I see when a woman is used to playing like that or not the minute we get into bed. No need to play the strong woman. To get 100.000 yen this w ay is almost embarrassing for me. If you agree, I will spend a second night with you. Call me when you feel like it. (In English) Good night, Reira, sweet dreams.

while hachi and nobu deal with their own shit, shin spends the night with ryoko, who compliments him on his charms and his speaking abilities, boasting about the education he's given him. he notices that she resembles reira, but not for certain angles. hachi comes to the practices in the studio as she's in Something with nobu, and shin's absolutely overjoyed, but -- here comes takumi to fuck it all up. hachi stays with takumi, and nobu runs home to find shin.

- Shin... A man and a woman are two beings attracted to each other by their mutual desire, right? Can love really link them?
- ... Sorry... I don't know either.

blast has a meeting with gaia music about their contracts and signing. on their way back home from dinner, shin receives a text and goes to reira's place. they're seen in a bathtub playing with the foam and bubbles. as he gets ready to leave, reira offers him money, to which he refuses due to her overpaying him the first time. she has him take it so he can come back in a later date, and he looks defeated as he takes it. back at their apartment, shin cunningly makes hachi and nobu go out to buy more alcohol, for nO ReAsOn WhAtSOeVeR. shin learns that yasuo and reira used to date:

- Reira loved Takumi, even before we dated. I don't know why, but she liked me. Being a year older than her, I was like a big brother. Takumi was already a dirty player back then, but he never touched Reira. In a way, it's because he took care of her, but only as a "song princess". And so, I tried to convince her to give up on Takumi so she'd go out with me, but from the moment we started dating, the feeling of being unable to compare to Takumi became even stronger. When I think about that, it was a stupid form of jealousy. I was unable to help Reira, not when she had problems with the band, nor when she was asking herself if she should go to Tokyo or not. I wasn't able to support me when she needed me most. It's natural that we broke up.
- But you have the strength to support her now, don't you?
- Let's just say she doesn't need my support anymore, and I'm way too busy taking care of you guys, you know?

since he sent nobu and hachi away with certainty that something was going to happen, he calls ryoko for permission to sleep over, calling her the woman who raised me. he gets confronted by yasuo.

- Liar. You're not supposed to have a mother, not even adoptive.
- How do you know that?
- If you don't want us to know about your origins, you should at least learn to use a borrowed name.
- Up till now, I haven't given my entire name to anyone. It's not that I don't want people to know anything, but I find displeasing that people would do researches about me.
- In that case, stop doing upsetting things. You pretend you're someone else, but you're still a merely fifteen year old boy. For the contract with the disc company to be legitimate, you need the signature of your legal guardian. If you don't want to see him, I'll ask him to sign it for you.
- I'm counting on you, Yasu-san.

and yasu pulls through, contacting shin's stepfather who signs the contract in his behalf, and he learns that the man absolutely dislikes shin and wants nothing to do with him. misato, a long term fan, questions herself about the contract, to which shin explains that it's a provisory measure - like an engagement before marriage. he helps her with english homework, and as she pushes him to talk about his heritage, believing he is a half, he explodes, stating that his parents should have never given his life. in the meantime, hachi finds out she's pregnant, unsure whose child it is - nobu's or takumi's. misato tells nana and hachi about the conversation they had previously.

as shin and blast get moved to a new studio due to their signing, shin has been trying his best to be on his best behavior and not smoke in the studio as he previously could. he complains and whines that hachi is never around in rehearsal anymore, and due to his stomachache from nicotine withdrawal, he runs to smoke hidden in a bathroom stall. at the same time, he hears a conversation between his executives about blast with complete lack of faith in their potential and that they doubt they'll sell. this deeply affects shin, who has been working hard with others to make something of themselves.

takumi finds out hachi is pregnant and tells nobu, stating he'll take care of the child and raise them regardless of who the real father is, should nana keep it. during this encounter, shin's once more at reira's. reira struggles to write a new song, to which shin is no help whatsoever, and she notices his bad mood immediately:

-Shin... Why are you so cold today?
- You think? Maybe it's because I'm sick of acting like a good boy! During all this month, I've gone to the rehearsals without missing a single one. I haven't smoked in the studio. I corrected my melodies as I was asked, but I'm starting to be sick of it!
- What? Gaia's rehearsal studios are non-smoking?! Normally, it's rather the opposite! We can smoke in the studio more than anywhere else! And there are still musicians that come?
- It's a learning studio! That studio is for students.
- Oh, there's a school! I think that the best of them can automatically start a professional career.
- Well, I'm not sure! And I don't care! Honestly, I don't give a damn about starting a professional career or not. The essential for me is that we can have fun in life.

he urges her to work on her love song instead of getting distracted, and while she sings a melody, she breaks down into tears thinking her shallow love stories will be a waste on such a good melody. shin steps in to tell her that lyrics written by someone who can cry like that can't be superficial, and she notes he's good at complimenting. he tells her that it's because of his job, but that this time, he means it, and he kisses her. this marks the evolution of their relationship to something not business-based. she shares her recently written lyrics with shin:

-"Never let go... of that hand you're holding... Even if on those trambling fingers, there's neither red thread nor promise ring...?"
- Don't read everything! I'm too ashamed!
- Tell me... What does the "red thread" mean?
- Eh, you don't know? The read thread is an invisible thread linking two destined people to one another.
- Oh... ... ... It's the kind of thing that girls must like!
- Yet, those theories on destiny don't interest me! Because I think that whatever each person's destiny is, two people are bound to each other by their mutual trust.
- Oh. Is that the image of hand in hand?
- I may think that way because I have a hard time accepting the fact I can't find a lover?
- It's a beautiful song!
- Thanks! You really made me feel better. I must do my best and sell another million disks!

takumi tells trapnest that hachi is pregnant and that they will get married. reira reacts by calling shin through sobs and gasps, and he attempts to calm her down through the phone, reassuring her that he can do whatever for her, and that she doesn't need to pay him for anything. instead of talking to him, however, she asks him for yasu's number. while yasu goes to soothe her nerves, shin is shown recreating the arrangement for Dearest Layla, the song that inspired reira's name with a newly bought guitar.

shin's still unaware of the takumi and hachi situation, which causes him to whine over the lack of her presence in their lives as of late, and once he makes that displeasure known, he's told that he isn't allowed to say hachi's name. he quickly becomes annoyed, and the first real fight with nana starts:

-I'm going out for a while.
- Aw, I'm jealous. So many big sisters to comfort you and buy guitars for you.
- I got it myself!
- Using the money given to you by women? That's the same! Easily obtaining the things you want in life, that'll make you slowly lose the will to fight for anything. Saying things like, "it's useless to try any further!" If you have the time to play the acoustic guitar, why don't you sharpen your skills with the bass?
- A vocalist who failed to quit smoking has no right to discipline me. What about Nana's new guitar? Your part-time pay is hardly enough for such a thing. If you can't pay for it, then you really shouldn't be using such a precious guitar.
- Ren lent it to me!
- And your clothes? All given to you by either Misato or Ren, right?
- AND WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT? DO NOT PUT ME ON THE SAME LEVEL AS YOU!
- Of course I'm not putting you on the same level as me. At least I'm putting effort into it. But Nana, you're just relying on Ren's sympathy.

and just like that, shin leaves nana to a newfound crisis of pride. shin, in need of comfort and soothing, calls hachi, but listens to takumi's voice in the background, and suddenly, everything makes sense. he returns to nana's, to find that she's truly mad at him. unfortunately, he needs to go just when ren arrives, and promises to apologize to nana at a later moment. hachi didn't give him a sense of relief at that moment, since she hung up on him, so once more, he's at reira's. there, he sings and plays the arrangement of dearest layla that he had prepared previously, leaving reira in tears. when she wakes up, he's gone, but he's purposefully left his lighter at her place. next up, shin meets hachi at a cafe, and he finds out the truth about the situation.

- Maybe I'm too weird, Takumi's pretty weird, too.
- No! I don't know what's weird and what's normal either. Don't take my words too seriously.
- Is Shin's family situation the same as I'm going through right now? The things about me, everyone's hiding it from Shin, not only because they don't want to talk about me, but also because of Shin. They don't want you to think about these painful memories, it's not because they don't trust you! I've also tried hiding it from you, because I know you'll be against it...
- I know that! Don't treat me like a kid.
- Then... Why does Shin... Wish that your mother never gave birth to you? Why do you think that? Please tell me! I don't want my child... To feel the same in the future. If the kid isn't Takumi's, Takumi will go through a lot of pain as well. The kid will doubt their looks, and wonder about the difference in blood types... But even so, if we work hard, it'll still be able to build a happy family... Am I too naive?

the next day, nobu wakes up and steps on a sleeping shin, who ends up awakening as well. first order of the day is to turn on the tv, and to his surprise, he's there! the entire band is! not for a good reason. nana's relationship with ren is now public knowledge. shin theorizes that the breaking news are a little too strange, like they were using ren's fame to help them sell. their manager comes running, telling them to pack, since they'll move to a hotel temporarily. nobu loses it, saying that gaia is the only one benefitting from putting them on top. since shin's listened to the conversation of their executives, he makes the point that they may be trying to crush them rather than to make them famous.

they make it to the hotel, including misato, who came immediately due to her worry and attachment to nana. nana states that she has already thrown away all her pride, and will use ren's fame to push herself to the top, and while she goes on this little moment, shin's sad because he sucks at using chopsticks. nobu isn't very fond of the fact they're gaining notority through trapnest, and he gets a wake up call from yasu. blast signs a more serious contract, and they're sent to training camp. he doesn't cease contact with reira, even though they're unable to see each other. he purchases a laptop with the intention of burning all the money he's made from her in ways he feels are fulfilling to their relationship - the laptop to send her emails, the guitar to sing to her. she's overseas, therefore, he takes a while to get an email back, in which she states he saved her again from a dark place, and she's the one now sending him emails.

back to tokyo, blast starts living in a hotel that resembles an apartment building for artists and celebrities, everyone's got their own rooms, and there aren't any curfews. in the same building lives kousaka yuri, an adult video star. nana confronts nobu to change rooms, and tell him not to forget about hachi and not to start a relationship with another woman - nobu says he's given up on her already. nana spirals into an anxiety attack, and a stranger gives them instructions on how to deal with it as she has been dealing with that herself. her name's miu, and she lives next door. nana goes to the doctor, and gets diagnosed with "excess breath". nobu gets to know miu a little better.

shin lets reira know he's unable to see her at the moment, but he's trying to come up with a way to see her. blast has another concert and their debut, and their schedule tightens. shin and reira find a gap on their schedule that is suitable, and they're also on the same spot. they meet in the blast's car. they talk about having sexual relations, and she makes a point that there's a difference between "you doing something for me and me doing something for you isn't the same", saying she's not a client anymore. after that happens, she finds out he has the same bloodtype and birthday as her, stating that, unlike before, now she believes in destiny. once they're back, trapnest and blast are to be on tv together, and shin and reira pretend they haven't seen each other since the first time they did.

shin gets a text from hachi asking to go to a festival with everyone! best news ever! everyone agrees to go. except hachi notices last minute that she isn't ready to see nobu, and thus nana lies to her that nobu had shown cowardice and hasn't shown. nobu gets ready to leave, and nana argues about his feelings for hachi, and as usual, says a ton of shit. shin isn't onboard, which causes him to call her off.

- Nana, you're cruel. You're pushing them down into quicksand. You'll only make Nobu more rash, and push Hachi into more pain. Nobu's a very peaceful person, for everyone to be content, he'll find a way where things can end happily. I don't think avoiding confrontation is being insincere.

hachi comes to the festival, and the next day, the mood within blast is just gloomy. blast gets invited to reira's birthday, and find out that the birth date that they knew of shin's is wrong - in fact, he explains that he put his birthday to be his brother's because it made him exactly eighteen years old. they decide to celebrate shin's birthday alongside reira's and nana and ren are to announce their engagement on the same day as blast's real debut.

nana and ren get engaged on television, and the birthday party ensues. takumi talks to shin, and while doing so, he asserts that he knows about shin and reira:

- Your lighter, it's a limited edition, right? The number on the back is the same as Reira's. How many seconds do you need to react? It's useless, your expression has betrayed you. If this was discovered, it's not just simple gossip.The fact that you're only 16 makes it a big deal. If they find out that Reira actually paid you to do it to her, it will be even more serious! Reira's life will be ruined because of this! At least wait till you're 18! And if you really love her still, then, start all over.

of course, this brings a terrible gloom to shin's mood, and the fact that he couldn't find hachi worsens it - until she comes and hugs him. she tells him that if takumi doesn't let her see shin, she won't marry him, which shocks him and endears him at the same time. they embrace for a bit. reira approaches to talk to hachi, but shin barely acknowledges her. once reira and shin go to the room, reira notices a difference in shin's behavior, and urges him to talk to her.

- All along... I've been fighting a battle... But I've lost! I'm sorry!
- What battle?
- A battle between love and desire. I know that it's dangerous for you to be here with me like this, and I, who can't restrain myself, can't seem to let go. Is it because I don't love Reira-san enough?
-If you're leaving me out of love, then I'll tell you now there's no need for that. Shin's existence is a comfort to me. Shin-chan, you mean the world to me, you're my savior!
- How can I be your savior when I make you commit such sins?! All I've done is turn you into a woman with a liking for young boys, a pedophile! I'm sorry... Forget me... The times I took your money, the things I said, I want you to forget all of it. Then perhaps we can... Start all over from the beginning... Then Reira-san would be more important to me than anyone.

she embraces him, and he doesn't make it back to blast's. he sees reira once more before blast leaves for a two weeks tour. in the tour, nobu and shin see yasu and a woman called shion meeting in his room. nobu, who is a very honest person, feels like he can't keep quiet, while shin tells him to but a "know nothing face" on as to not hurt nana's feelings, as she does feel a certain way about yasu, even if she is marrying ren. they come back to tokyo, and reira takes a trip to her hometown with ren. she texts him to let him know. paparazzi take pictures of reira and ren, and takumi marries hachi as a ways to divert attention from the media. hachi tells shin and nana, they hang out a little, and shin goes to reira's. they make out, but reira stops shin to talk:

- So, what's this about?
- When I went with Ren to visit his home, the paparazzi took our picture.
- Huh?
- Of course, you know there's nothing going on between me and Ren, right?
- Yeah, of course I do. If you were feeling guilty, you wouldn't have sent me that email. Were you worried that I would have misunderstood if I saw the picture?
- What? That's not it, the company will blanket the article.
- Really?! Then it's all good!
- NO, IT'S NOT! Due to that... We brought everyone much trouble. We bothered a lot of people around us and made them worry... It also helped me realize what my position is. I can't afford to create a scandal now... Besides, singing is the only way by which I can make a living, and I made many sacrifices for it. If Trapnest falls because of me, I will never forgive myself. Shin-chan, you also... Have to do your best as a Blast member now, but I kept relying on you and was always selfish... and like that, they break up. hachi is alone home and invites shin over, and she asks him to quit his business as a sex worker.

- But yesterday, when you left, you made it sound like you had a bunch of customers waiting! And you kissed Ren! I'm jealous!
- I was just joking, all that stuff I said. Right now, I'm doing well, it's not like I don't have money. My face sells well, but if I keep on doing things like that, it will ruin me. I'm not that much of an idiot.
- Shin-chan... Do you really like Reira-san that much?
(In tears) - I don't know... I can't say for sure that I'll go abck to her when I'm really an adult... Does that mean I didn't really love Reira-san, then?
- Of course not...

hachi urges takumi to do something. during their hangout after schedule, reira calls shin, and they fight, as shin calls her selfish due to her thinking calling and talking is alright after they broke up, as it might be fine to her, but it would be harder for him to not want to see her under these conditions. they celebrate hachi's birthday... and shin's asked to take out his promise ring with reira for a performance. the entire situation makes shin rather shaken, upset, and he goes back to the familiar, ending up back at ryoko's, who says some disturbing shit about how if he grows too much, he won't be cute, and that people from scandinavia (such as himself) are really tall. this affects shin to the point he refuses to eat properly, saying he doesn't want to grow any taller.

articles about nana's mother's abandoment of her come out, and while everyone is losing their minds, shin states he doesn't think she'll be upset about it, and reads their reactions as "how people who were loved by their parents would react". she doesn't really give many shits about it - even if there's still some tension within blast about it. thoughts of reira continue to pop up in his mind.

his refusal to eat worries blast, but alas. reira sends him a text asking to talk and saying she doesn't want to pretend that nothing happened. this angers shin, and upsets him deeply, and he convinces his staff that he is going home in his free time, as an excuse to be with ryoko. once he makes it into the building, he runs into his brother, who mocks his japanese skills and demands an explanation for his presence in the building. shin says he's simply there to get things from his room, and is told his room doesn't exist anymore because it had been turned into a library by his stepfather. this is just adding insult to injury.

the next day, shin's nowhere to be found. all of blast and trapnest go on a search. reira states that ryoko lives in the same apartment building as shin's family, and has a flashback of shin saying "she had a fetish for badass pretty boys. i just did what she trained me to do. she had many others like me handy", and states how ryoko taught shin about how to drink alcohol and smoke, amongst worse. blast gets the news that shin had been arrested by the police due to marijuana use. the police raided her apartment while they were together, so there had been no way to escape the allegations. blast's tour gets cancelled due to the recent developments, and shin's in prison for the next month.

when shin's released, the first thing he does is ask his manager for a cigarette. he's told that there will be a celebration party for his release, which angers him, as he truly believes there's nothing to celebrate about any of this and he locks himself up in his room.
